Financial Literacy Education and Free Tax Preparation

Here's a great way to make a big difference in the lives of low-income residents in your own community. As a tax volunteer, you can help low-income residents get their refund quickly through e-filing, including special tax credits, without paying a cent! Become an IRS-certified Tax Prepare at a VITA Site in your community. VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and it's a program established and supported by the IRS to ensure that low-income residents do not have to pay to get their income taxes prepared professionally. You'll also be able to file their state income taxes as well.

Many VITA Sites continue their efforts throughout the year by providing free financial literacy courses, IDA programs (special savings accounts that help low-income residents save towards a specific goal), and other services that help them develop assets and move out of poverty.

For the Malden, Medford, Everett area and surrounding communities, the VITA Site is located at the Cyber Cafe @ Malden Square. To become a volunteer, call 866-833-2823 and leave your name, phone, best time to contact, and tell us you want to volunteer for the VITA Site (we use the line for several programs). We'll get back to you within 2-3 business days! You can also check our tax website for information, http://taxpartnership.maldensquare.org, which will be updated soon with information for the coming tax season.

For a VITA site in another community, call 1-800-829-1040.
